I find it increasingly disturbing that the MEDIA are choosing the leadership of the political parties and the leadership of the uk , HTAF did Burnham suddenly emerge as the saviour of the uk
If I were a resident of Manchester I would be incandescent with anger that this gobshite suddenly thought he could treat the people who elected him as mayor with contempt and challenge the other clowns for Keir's job as if they are inconsequential
I just can't help thinking the whole mayoral regionalism bs is a ruse to insert new layers of Neo-Liberal beauracratic w***ers to help push more SEZ / Freeport nonsense and put even more public infrastructure beyond Democratic Accountability!
The much vaunted Open Society ( of the West ) has never really been THAT open.
Likewise neither have the West's Democracies ever been THAT democratic.
Nor the Free World THAT free; or if so, only by comparison to prior Dictatorships & Quasi- Totalitarian States, eg those of Nazi Germany & Stalinist Russia. Pretty low bars to feel superior to. If the best that can be said of Western Democracies is that are better than those two aberrations is that not underachievement on a massive scale?
But at least in the past it * appeared * that you got who/what you voted for: the two most manifest examples of that being the Post-War Atlee Gov ( probably the best Gov the UK has ever had ) and the Thatcher Gov, which, even if you detested it - as I did/ do - did pretty much what it said it was going to do, albeit not in so many words: I suppose if it had came out during the '79 G.E Campaign and said....." if elected * my * Gov will destroy the Trade Unions/ Worker's Rights/Protections turn Britain from it's once mighty Manufacturing based Economy into a Darwinian survival of the most venal Casino Capitalist hell-hole and sell off every Treasury-enhancing publicly owed Utility, eg Water/ Electricity/ Energy-in-general/BT, ditto public housing and not rebuild such to anywhere near the requisite degree: had they said all this explicitly in advance they may not have won that G.E; although that speculation is moot - it may still have!
Nonetheless, it was fairly obvious before the election what they - Thatcher/Tories - were about. In short, tearing up the ' Social Contract ' ( such as that ever was ) and replacing it with paeans to feral * Free * Enterprise and adulation of Entrepreneurs. Look where all that has landed us
Now though, never has voting meant so little, pre-electoral promises & pledges so worthless and the Political Caste treated the public so contemptuously.
It's not more scraps of devolved top/down crumbs Scotland needs, but a Revolution - if not in martial terms, then certainly in psychological ones.
