The problem with applying the concept of "Cognitive inertia" is this: "attend to a problem or issue".

The very first step is to establish the importance of any arbitrary problem or issue to an individual. If something is of little or no importance, we may have an opinion off the cuff, but we really don't care either way. If "corrected" (read contradicted) we might answer "Oh, really, how interesting", and either change our view - or not. That issue just doesn't matter to us either way.

For example, I might say "That Victoria Beckham behaved really badly at the wedding"; someone might say "It was the fault of (whoever) egged her on". I'd say "Oh really, I never knew that". Basically because quite frankly my dear, when it comes to Posh and Becks, I really don't give a damn.

On the other hand, on issues we really care about we should indeed be prepared to listen to different points of view, compare and contrast, evaluate, and perhaps change or modify our opinion. Or not!

As long as you don't change/modify your opinion to suit our foreign invaders Y2. Never be brainwashed by the foreign english media.....Otherwise an interesting balanced comment. I watch and listen all the time..then I support Scotland..simples!

For OUR Scotland and her brave weans.

Spot on...pointing out quite succinctly the sickness at the heart of Holyrood.

I have come to the conclusion that the SNP have been in power for far too long..achieving little in the way of independence..and amazingly expecting the electorate to accept their dreadful inertia while they go on their merry way..gibbering about 'secret plans'..awarding themselves a payrise ( for what ?) and expecting us to fall for the same scam over and over again..

Maybe they are hoping we are too busy trying to survive ..being ripped off in energy scams set up by the foreign english..Scottish households being taxed up to £55 MORE on electricity than Londoners.( Believe in Scotland..today) Whit ye doin' aboot that swiney?

I watch the foreign english government hand our land to an american nutcase so he can attack other nations at will ( and we are not told!) .. that then followed by some squeaks from our pathetic ..'government'.. then being told by a little sh*tty scottish quisling ..alexander... that it's none of the Scottish government's business..The usual scam..'RESERVED'..

Swiney should have SCREAMED out in Holyrood about this attack on our country....and it was an attack...slammed up notices on bill boards...took out adverts in newspapers ...called alexander/stammer to Holyrood to explain themselves...kept the subject to the forefront until stammer had to respond..and a nasty warning to alexander re his treacherous actions against Scotland ..anything...just make those foreign english b*st*rds and their treacherous quisling supporters like alexander......very nervous...and tell the people..loudly what is happening...

Meantime to deflect the great wrong done to Scotland the foreign deceitful english media are yelling about the failings of a hospital blaming ..of course ...the SNP . Great deflection..look over there not here where Scotland is being trashed once again.

We have no other leaders to depend on..sadly lost Alec Salmond too soon. Maybe we deserve to be prisoners of the foreign english...

Once again I look across the Irish Sea and watch our FREE cousins...they did it the hard way..the only way.

For OUR Scotland and her weans... who should be getting mad....

Unfortunately we have no brave men and women as the Irish did to fight to free Ireland. Nobody will really fight for Scotland's freedom from English rule or it would already have been started. We are captive to a foreign government, Peter is wasting his breath.

I agree with everything you say except the bit about the wasting of breath. While it might feel like that, to quote the lyrics from Peter Gabriel's song 'Biko' about the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa 'you can blow out a candle but you can't blow out a fire - once the flames begin to catch the wind will blow it higher.' I truly hope that when the great Swinney plan is seen for what it is... a REAL waste of breath, time, energy and hope... then those within the movement who've been saying all along it won't work will be vindicated and HOPEFULLY at least SOME of those suffering from cognitive inertia will be jolted from it and if not... be swept aside by the growing mass that ARE receptive to a credible strategy based on new thinking. Out with the old and in with the new!

Aye, Stuart. But time is most definitely not on our side. There can be no doubt that the British state aims to make it impossible for us to pursue independence in whatever way it can. And the Union gives them all the power they need.

Many people seem to imagine there is some kind of reset after a wasted opportunity such as 2021 was, and 2026 is all but certainly going to be. Not so! Each time, we start again on different ground. Each time, that ground grows more difficult to traverse. At some point, there will be no moves left.

Stuart McColl's avatar

That's the big worry. Also the longer we're in the union the more we'll be asset stripped to the bone leaving us less to rebuild with. I even wondered the other day if Wales would take their independence before we did the way things are going - oh the shame that would pour on us! Someone even suggested that Wales, N

Ireland and Scotland should join together to kick England out of the Union 😄 that would be sweet

Yes, many people in the independence-movement are undoubtedly "captive to a foreign government", primarily as a result of their habit of cognitive-inertia re: the constitutional question and the true position of Scotland in this 'partnership-of-equals'. To appreciate what 'new-thinking' entails: may I respectfully suggest that you obtain and study a copy of Doun Hauden, by Professor Alf Baird. Google: Salvo/Liberation, a non-party political organisation, and study the writings of Sara Salyers. Scotland is an English colony, but it's the Scots, not Westminster who are sovereign. Many, such as, Peter, have embraced the new-thinking and is hardly 'wasting has breath' in the opinion of many.

These words GAC are manna to the deceitful foreign english and their wee treacherous quislings. Never allow the FOREIGN english sh*t to feel comfortable..we can all do our bit...make Scotland a hostile desert to them....don't be friendly...don't buy foreign english if possible.(not easy as their foreign claws are everywhere)..I wouldn't want to live in a country where I was glared at and detested.I do it all the time .. get yer Saltire up..it's great tae see it flying in the wind...nae Jock Tamsons bairns for me..just the Scots..they'll call you racist .. I was told by a foreign english git that she hoped I choked on my racist bile...then you know you are winning! As Picard said....Make it so!

For OUR Scotland and down with sh*tty invaders!
