While I am familiar with the weariness Lesley Riddoch feels. I don’t imagine an inquiry into the SNP’s financial management would make me feel any less disheartened. I can’t think of anything the SNP leadership might do to regain my trust. The time for repair is past. Too much damage has been done. As Lesley says:

I've thought ( like many others ) the snP is limping to complete irrelevance; recent events and looming further crises have/will only serve/d to hasten that process. It's neither a pretty nor a welcome sight and deserving of gloating scorn and multiple slop buckets of " told you so " those responsible are, the awful reality is that * all this * has done incalculable damage to the Independence Cause - if not terminal, almost certainly very, very severe, and it's extremely difficult to see where redemption/renewal could come from - the snP having so thoroughly co-opted the idea of Scottish Independence in the eyes of the overwhelming majority of supporters of that idea. I could be wrong, but I can see no credible messiah figure in the current snP ranks
Even if the total internal revolution of that party people like ourselves have been saying was the only way it could be saved was to occur, I fear it may be too late for it, the wounds inoperable, the toxins too permeated, the will too feeble.
One side question is WTF did Kenny MacAskill pull the plug so abruptly on ALBA - I know there were * issues * around finances and electoral particularities, but, as far as I knew, nothing insurmountable. Whatever our thoughts on that party, they would surely have been the beneficiaries of the snP's current meltdown.

In answer to the question in your first paragraph, Robert, I am constantly baffled as to the thinking behind John Swinney's decisions and choices. Generally speaking, I reckon that in order to figure out such things, one need only know what the politician's imperatives are and what options are available to them. If independence were an imperative for Swinney, his choices from among available options simply don't make sense.
It was exactly the same with Sturgeon. Hence the "baleful ghost" remark. She haunts the SNP like a malign spirit. She is a poltergeist, sowing discord and disorder.
The FOREIGN english government must be over the moon . Scotland is a dark criminal place!

Postcolonial theory is clear about the need to remove a national party that has sought only "to make an accommodation with colonialism. It should seem obvious that the political process has failed here. The 'co-opted' national party thus 'disintegrates'.

What was a surprise is how quickly this would reveal itself and to the gob-smacking extent that it has:
The embezzlement (Murrell bang to rights, but fall out on-going)
The fraud (money raised for a specific purpose used for another; the SNP leader reported to Police)
The stitch-up of Alex Salmond (court case coming soon)
Every time John Swinney or Nicola Sturgeon speak they contradict previous statements.
It's havoc crashing into chaos.
With no end in sight.
Despite all the of the betrayals (above) the biggest act of treachery for me remains that the leadership cabal running the SNP over the last dozen years have been fraudulent freedom fighters.
