I was reading a piece in The National this morning (Westminster’s independence stance at odds with Holyrood mandate), and I suddenly thought, “Bollards!” Now, I have been known to use this term to describe people who are being particularly dense.
Agreed..sounds a bit saner than me..I just want to take a lochaber tae them. I am just back from the village and had a great discussion with two female assistants..agreed with me totally ... one was of Irish descent ( of course)..donegal..must be in the DNA tae hate the auld enemy .... always puts herself as Irish and NEVER british.. Her young son desperate for independence...told him to look at your substack...the younger generation have more balls than ours. That's where Scotland's freedom lies..aided by us.
Swinney is dangerously unimaginative and wholly possessed by a belief in the powers and prerogatives of the enemy. Not remotely the best mind-set to successfully lead your nation forward to liberation from its thieving colonial oppressor.
The thing is Peter the Scots do not seem to see through Holy Wullie's games( they vote for him?).. I read the National comments..saw yours.. ( which are immediately attacked ..never agreed with)...and one of those comments .. by a quisling ..pointed out that half of Scots are against independence. I worry that these so called invidious 'polls' convince Scots that half of our nation don't want to leave the foreign english union..that Scotland gets absolutely nothing out of. I have come to the conclusion that no foreign english turds now squatting in Scotland should be allowed to vote in our future...only Scots. That's what I mean about us being totally and viciously ruthless when it comes to our freedom. No true Scot would want another foreign country.. especially one that has been a reliable historical enemy..destroy our nation and its freedom. ( fox in chicken house )These polls are poisonous lies fabricated by our historical enemy. And when confronted by a dangerous lying snake you chop its head off ..not listen to its lies. I am amusingly reminded of Kaa the snake in Jungle book trying to bedazzle Shere Khan ..who immediately brought his paw down on the snake's head and squashed it...saying politely. 'I've no time for this sort of nonsense.'....
I have come around to the idea that there should be a restricted franchise for a constitutional referendum. But first we have to get that referendum. I reckon fairness can be achieved by tightening the residency requirements. Let's say you have to have been a resident in Scotland for a total of four years out of the seven prior to the closing date for registering to vote. Or for a single continuous period of three years prior to that day. something alongg those lines.
Someone said the UN standard for Independence votes was either born in the territory or or resident there for 20 years. I don't knos if that's true? And I don't know if the 20 had to be the last 20, consecutively, or whether they meant currently resident plus 20 years of your life? Bearing in mind how many of our people leave to find work.
I think Peter you give Holy Wullie the option of being stupid..when in fact he is quite a devious tricky wee b*st*rd.(bollards far too kind) He set a high bar for the SNP to fail...deliberately. He knows the set up for elections in Scotland is intended to make it impossible to achieve total majority. (Everything is a scam in Scotland)...so why would he do that? Well then he can go on his way decrying westmonster when they won't oblige by 'giving' him permission to challenge some foreign english 'rule' ...while making Scotland look infantile when we have to 'ask' daddy if we can go oot tae play.Reminds me of the totally insane comment by Salmond who should have known better. ..'once in a generation'...whit! we only get one shot at being free then we are kept prisoners FOREVER by the hostile turds south of OUR country pillaging and insulting our nation. Aye right jimmy...where did that dumb idea come from.......the sad colonised mind methinks...
Our beloved FM is NOT a leader...but a traitor to his homeland. We have quite a few in our fair land. ( look to Holyrood) I now anticipate in dread of watching the pantomime ( probably last 4 or 5 years) of him dancing aboot with no intention of really fighting for our desperately need independence..as the world becomes a very dangerous place and we are not in control. of our destiny in it...but allow the 'auld enemy' of Scotland..foreign england... to decide how to use us as fodder or resources..and we let them.
I hope every day something akin to an asteroid will hit westmonster and we finally come out of our self induced coma...and in fact it has happened ...the so called uk government are in a shocking mess...and we sit watching in a trance like it's a Netflix to be enjoyed instead of grabbing this opportunity of closing our border and finally growing up...but as long as swiney is in control we have absolutely no hope of being a self governing country ever again. When I talk to ordinary Scots they seethe with indignation..if we could only harness hatred and aim it south because if you truly want your country back you FIGHT for it..you trash the enemy as they have trashed you....let's hope the generations to come object to the hostile destruction of Scotland and take action..cos we sure as hell haven't.
Tbf to Alex Salmond, I think he what he actually meant was a combination of 'FIRST time in a generation' (as 1979 and 1997 votes even for Home Rule were a while earlier), and 'vote YES NOW, because it took a lot of skill and 'flukes' to even GET this vote, so you'll be lucky to get the opportunity again in decades.' (And sadly our lack of vote since, in 12 years, has proven him right.)
Once in 319 years is the reality. So for it to equate to 'once in a generation' (of circa 25 years) we need an annual referendum every year until 2034, and every 25 years thereafter!
You are correct about Swinney being devious and tricky. But he is not as crafty as he imagines. Or he is only as artful as he needs to be in order to fool people who want to be fooled. His ruses only seem stupid when you see through them. The more easily you see through them, the stupider they appear.
John Swinney seems to be talking bollards. His 'approach' does appear to be stupid.
But is he? And is it?
Haven't we seen similar behaviour before when Nicola Sturgeon was FM?
When asked about a Section 30 for referendum purposes Theresa May said 'Now is not the time' in 2017. So that was that. Then, when asked to adjudicate on the matter, the UK Supreme Court pronounced in 2022 that the Scottish Parliament couldn't pass legislation on the constitution under the terms of the Scotland Act 1998. So that was that.
Isn't it all just a wee bit performative? The FM getting the issue out of the way early in the new parliamentary session. He is apparently meeting with Keir Starmer in June - assuming the latter is still PM, which is far from certain - but he's already told him that he's not for changing his mind.
In that event John Swinney can say 'I went. I tried. I crashed'. And that will be that.
On thing for sure: John Swinney's bollards runs the risk of wrecking Scotland's Cause.

Peter, I noticed you got a mention on "The Scotland Channel" which was great to see. Time to get the truth out there.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Swinney has a wee factory in his Holyrood office which manufactures bollards specifically to ensure he will never have to face Westminster down.

'Performative' was the word that popped into my head when I read the article.
